What to Pack for Spring Break in the Outer Banks?
The weather during the spring months can be a bit unpredictable, so our recommendation is to pack layers so you’re well prepared. Mornings and evenings tend to be a bit breezy, while the daytime temperatures can be warmer. Think short-sleeves and shorts for the afternoon, but pack hoodies and long pants for the mornings and evenings. The water may be a bit cold, but don’t let that stop you from packing your swimsuit! You’ll also want to make sure you have sunscreen, sunglasses, and hats to protect you from the sun.
In short, here’s what to pack for your OBX spring vacation:
- Clothing – Lightweight layers, a rain shell, and a warm fleece for cooler evenings.
- Gear – A beach bag, reusable water bottles, and a kit for shelling.
- Protection – Sunscreen (even if it’s cloudy) and bug spray for the marshier areas.
Things to Do on the Outer Banks During Spring Break

The Beach!
The Outer Banks offers 130 miles of coastline, so there is no shortage of beaches to visit on your vacation. The beaches in Kill Devil Hills and Kitty Hawk are great for surfing, as they tend to see larger waves, while Nags Head offers plenty of space for families to spread out. All of our Outer Banks vacation rentals are either oceanfront or located just a short walk to the beach, so you can spend less time commuting and more time digging your toes in the sand and building sandcastles.
Explore Jockey’s Ridge State Park & Jockey’s Ridge Crossing
Jockey’s Ridge State Park is an iconic Outer Banks attraction and is home to the tallest living sand dune system on the Atlantic Coast. The dunes range anywhere from 80′ to 100′ feet tall and will make you feel like you’re in the middle of the desert! The park is great for flying kites, hiking (there are three trails to choose from), and just soaking up the sun. Afterwards, stop by Jockey’s Ridge Creamery, just across from the state park, for a sweet treat.
Preserve Property Tip: There is no fee to enter Jockey’s Ridge State Park. If you’re bringing your dog, be mindful of the sand temperatures and sandspurs! Bringing foot protection for your pup is recommended.
Visit the North Carolina Aquarium on Roanoke Island
Dive into the underwater world of the Outer Banks at the NC Aquarium and get the chance to touch stingrays, watch the river otters play, and admire the sharks. Marvel at the indoor exhibits like the Delicate Drifters (jellyfish) and the STAR Center (sea turtle rehabilitation), or step outside and explore the four outdoor exhibits like the Pollinator Habitat Garden and Rain Garden.
Preserve Tip: Reservations are required to enter, so book in advance to secure the time and date you want!
Wild Horse Tour in Corolla
When many think of the Outer Banks, they think of the wild horses that roam free in Corolla. Wild Horse Adventure Tours is here to help make that dream come true! Hop into one of their open-air Hummers and scope out the area with a seasoned guide in search of the Colonial Spanish Mustang Horses.
