The Best Time to Visit the Outer Banks

November 5, 2025

The Outer Banks of North Carolina is one of those destinations where when you go can make a big difference in what your experience feels like. Whether you’re planning to stay in an OBX rental in the town of Duck, explore the beach scene of Nags Head, or immerse yourself in history in Kill Devil Hills, the timing of your visit will shape everything from weather and crowd levels to what kinds of activities are best. Here’s a season-by-season breakdown to help you pick the best time to visit the Outer Banks.

Best Time to Visit the Outer Banks - Nags Head Pier

Spring (March – May)

Spring is one of the best seasons to visit the Outer Banks. The weather is warm and sunny, and average temperatures range from the mid-50s in early spring to the mid-70s by the end of May. You can expect fewer crowds and lower rental rates on our Outer Banks vacation rentals as well, making it an ideal time to visit if you’re looking for some savings on your beach vacation.

While the water isn’t warm enough for swimming or other water activities, there are still plenty of outdoor adventures to be had. One of the best ways to elevate your Outer Banks experience is by staying in one of our historic Outer Banks vacation rentals. Each of our Preserve Property homes has a unique story to tell. Start your day off with a beach walk and collect unique shells along the way. In the afternoon, head to the locally-owned shops and boutiques in each of the towns to find the perfect outfit or keepsake. This is also a great time to visit the Outer Banks attractions that tend to be crowded in the summer, like the Wright Brothers National Memorial and the Bodie Island Lighthouse.

Spring is also bustling with events as the weather warms up. OBX Taste of the Beach takes place in March and is a celebration of the OBX’s talented culinary scene. And in May, vacationers and locals can attend the OBX Rod & Custom Festival or Annual Hang Glide Spectacular at Jockey’s Ridge State Park.

Tip: Consider booking a vacation home with a hot tub or adding pool heat if you want to take a dip in the water on your visit to the beach.

Summer (June – August)

Summer is the busiest season on the Outer Banks, with kids out of school and many seeking a much-needed beach vacation. The weather is hot and humid, with temperatures reaching the mid-80s, although the ocean breeze blows away some of the humidity. Water temperatures are warm and comfortable during this time of year, typically staying around 80(F).

Aside from catching waves and building sandcastles on the beach, many of the Outer Banks’ attractions and activities are open this time of year. Add popular attractions like the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse to your itinerary, or catch a show at The Lost Colony,  a story of Sir Walter Raleigh’s final expedition to the New World and the 117 men, women, and children who disappeared into mystery. H2OBX is also open for the season and features thrilling rides and slides, kid-friendly play structures, and more.

In the summer, there are several kite festivals throughout the Outer Banks that you can attend. The Annual Outer Banks Watermelon Festival is a favorite. Expect watermelon-themed contests like watermelon bowling, seed-spitting contest, and rubberband challenge.

Fall (September – November)

Locals know that fall is absolutely the best time to visit the Outer Banks and is the island’s best-kept secret. Fall is considered shoulder season on the OBX, so things mellow out, but you’ll still be able to take advantage of warm weather and water temperatures. Fall is also hurricane season, so if you plan to visit during this time, make sure to be weather aware and plan your trip accordingly.

If you’re a surfer or kite boarder, this is your time to shine with wind and swell conditions often in prime conditions during this time of year, especially in Nags Head and Kill Devil Hills. Or, head to Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge or Jockey’s Ridge State Park to spot migratory birds and enjoy the golden hues of fall sunsets.

In the fall, celebrate local culture at events like the Duck Jazz Festival, the Outer Banks Seafood Festival in Nags Head, and OBX Brewtag, where teams launch beer kegs to see whose can fly the farthest.

Winter (December – February)

Winter on the Outer Banks offers a completely different kind of coastal experience — peaceful, uncrowded, and surprisingly beautiful. Visitors can enjoy long walks on nearly empty beaches, searching for shells or watching the waves roll in under blue skies. Plus, winter lodging rates are often significantly lower, making it a great time for a peaceful getaway.

Popular events during winter are focused around the holiday season, and the island tends to quiet down in January. There are a few events during this time of year that you don’t want to miss, including WinterLights, 12-Bars of Christmas, the Misfit Bar Crawl, and Kites with Lights at Jockey Ridge State Park. Vacation rental availability and prices can reflect the increased crowds in this season, so visitors should book accommodations and activities early when possible.

So, when is the best time to visit the Outer Banks?
